Glendalough Visitor Centre and the free ruins
Glendalough Visitor Centre is the paid OPW attraction beside the monastic settlement. The ruins, lakes and national park are free to enter; parking is a separate expense. Choose the centre for an introduction to the monastery, then leave time for the outdoor buildings. Buying admission to the centre is a different decision from joining a day trip from Dublin.
The NPWS Information Office is a separate facility associated with the national park. Keep the two names distinct when planning a stop or asking about opening hours. For the round tower, cathedral and church, use the monastic site guide; the history page explains how the settlement developed.

Entrance fee and tickets
The published OPW admission is 5 EUR for adults, 4 EUR for groups or seniors and 13 EUR for a family. These are the rates on the undated venue page, rather than a separately announced 2026 price change. OPW's general family policy gives children under 12 free admission with a valid ticket. Ask the centre which ticket applies to your family or concession before paying.
Paid parking in the Visitor Centre Car Park entitles the holder to one free centre admission. This benefit covers one admission, rather than everyone travelling in the vehicle. Keep the parking payment available when arranging entry. For the practical differences between this car park, Laragh and the Upper Lake car park, see getting to Glendalough.
Our pick: a guided monastic visit
For a guided alternative to a centre visit, this Dublin trip includes a monastic-site tour.
Hand-picked tours, booked through GetYourGuide. Prices are indicative starting prices in euros (as of October 2026). Tap a tour for live availability and the current price in your currency.
Dublin excursion with a guided monastery visit
Travel by coach from Dublin for an English-guided visit and free time at the monastic site. This is an excursion, not an OPW admission ticket; a visitor-centre visit is not promised.
Opening hours through the year
The summer schedule runs from mid-March to 14 October: 09:30 to 18:00, with last admission at 17:15. The winter schedule runs from 15 October to mid-March: 09:30 to 17:00, with last admission at 16:15. The centre closes from 23 to 29 December inclusive. Plan the indoor part before the last-entry time, especially if your day also includes the lakes.
Winter toilets at the OPW centre close at 16:15. This is a facility-specific closing time, not a closing time for the ruins or the separate Council toilets at Upper Lake. If you arrive late, organise the facilities you need before setting off on a walk. The seasonal planning guide helps put the centre visit alongside weather and daylight considerations.
Exhibition, film and guided enquiries
An older OPW visitor guide from 2024 describes an exhibition about the monastic settlement and a film lasting about 15 minutes. Treat that as an introduction to the centre's interpretation, and ask on arrival about the day's presentation. Allow your indoor stop to explain the buildings rather than trying to fit it between a rushed walk and a departure.
OPW lists guided visits as an enquiry option. Contact the centre on 046 9407156 to discuss arrangements; build your day around an agreed visit rather than a presumed daily departure. The Dublin excursion featured here instead includes a guided monastic-site visit and free time, an English-speaking guide and coach travel. Its pub stop includes Guinness for adults aged 18 and over; meals cost extra. Compare the broader Dublin day trips if transport is your main need.
Accessibility and the national park office
OPW describes the centre as fully accessible, while the cemetery is very difficult for wheelchair users and outdoor paths are uneven. Make separate decisions about the indoor attraction and the ground outside: an accessible centre does not make the whole monastic site equally easy to navigate. Dogs must remain on a lead outdoors.
The NPWS Information Office has its own hours: 09:30 to 16:30 from November to February, and 10:00 to 17:30 from March to October. Lunch or staffing breaks can interrupt service, and it closes at Christmas. Use that office for national park information and the OPW centre for the monastery's visitor interpretation. For a walk after either stop, choose your route using the walking guide.
Visitor centre questions

When is the last winter admission?
Last entry is 16:15 during the winter schedule, with the centre closing at 17:00. It is closed from 23 to 29 December inclusive.
Is the excursion a visitor-centre ticket?
It is a Dublin day trip with a guided monastic-site visit and free time. OPW-centre admission and a centre visit are not promised as part of it.
